The Coronavirus and Tourism

It is becoming increasingly clear that this virus is going to dramatically affect the tourism industry in 2020. As flights are cancelled, large events are put on hold, and bulk-buying of toilet paper becomes the norm, are people going to put their travel and holiday plans on hold?

The most pressing issue is the threat of travel bans. We know that some parts of Italy have been quarantined – will other countries and areas follow suit? At the time of writing the UK foreign office warns against ‘all but essential’ travel to several Italian towns – if, as some warn, the UK and other countries decide to advise against ‘all but essential’ travel EVERYWHERE – European towns and businesses that depend on tourism are going to suffer an indescribable amount.

Public events such as football matches, opera performances, and tours have been cancelled or postponed in Italy. Germany and France have now banned large gatherings of over 1000 people.

In Venice, the hotels, restaurants, and other tourist attractions are already feeling the impact – even before the long-anticipated Easter break which is normally a welcome reprieve after the long slow winter months. Europe is receiving considerably fewer visitors from China – in the three weeks following travel restrictions in China it has been reported that travel to Europe from China fell by 41.7%.

However, all that being said – the peak travel time will really begin in April – and a lot can change in that time. Savvy travelers are finding great bargain breaks on offer, as hotels and airlines are cutting prices to attract customers. You can easily find a one-way flight from London to Faro in April for just 19.99! You might actually decide that the time to take a holiday had really never been better! The UK has shifted to its second stage of tackling the coronavirus outbreak – to ‘delay’ rather than ‘contain’ – as it admits that the virus is likely to spread throughout the world. There really is no need to stay home – as your risk of contracting the virus is now likely to be much the same wherever you are. Ok – perhaps you may want to stay clear of Wuhan for a while….!

Official advice remains the same. Wash your hands regularly. Use a tissue when you sneeze or cough. Avoid close contact with sick people. Here at PIE Lagos we think we kinda think you should all be doing these things all the time anyway! Medical professionals advise that you should treat the coronavirus as you would treat the flu – keep basic health and hygiene in mind, and don’t travel if you’re sick.

Symptoms of coronavirus include a cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, fever, and tiredness. If you have all of these – go ahead and seek medical advice.

The bottom line is simple. You don’t need to cancel your travel plans. Enjoy your holiday. Get some sunshine. Take advantage of the great deals and escape the drudgery and stress of the real world. Wash your hands. Oh, and there are no toilet paper shortages to report here in Lagos!

Lagos residents and locals - lets get out and support our local businesses. We’re all in this together! We’ve got loads of great bars and restaurants to enjoy, and some super exciting events coming up such as the Lagos World Beer Fest, Rota de Petisco, and the Lagos Food Fest.

As always we’d love to hear your thoughts! Get in touch and let us know how coronavirus is affecting your travel plans.

About Brooklyn Brewery

Why you should be excited to try the Brooklyn Brewery Beers here in PIE Lagos, Portugal!

We are incredibly proud and excited to stock beers from the world famous Brooklyn Brewery.

If you love finding incredible craft beers in your local bar or restaurant, then you’ve probably got Brooklyn Brewery to thank. This awesome brewery is widely credited with bringing real ales and craft beers into the mainstream. Their craft beers were some of the first to find their way into local bars and pubs around the world.

The Brooklyn Brewery is headed up by award-winning Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, and his team create classic brews along with experimental flavours. You’ll find their beers in over 30 countries, but so far in Lagos Portugal you’ll only be able to find them here at PIE Lagos!

They are also proud to support local communities and businesses around the world - and community involvement is at the heart of their brewery…right there in Brooklyn!

Right now in PIE Lagos you can enjoy the Brooklyn Lager - an award winning amber lager with “flavors of toffee, toast, and caramel with a dry-hopped aroma full of grapefruit, flowers, and pine.” ABV 5.2%.

Also why not try the East IPA - a “uniquely balanced IPA with malt-driven notes of toffee rounding out pleasantly bitter and aromatic hops.” ABV 6.9%

You’ll find either of these are perfect to enjoy with some of our tasty bar snacks and pies!

Come on up and see what all the fuss is about!

A big "Thank-You" to Lagos Câmara!

Getting a business up and running is a difficult process, for anyone anywhere in the world. We’d like to take the time to give a shout out to Lagos Câmara, who have done what they can to make things as difficult as possible for us - and who seem determined to make things hard for new local business to succeed. Way to go!

The biggest and most recent problem for us involves our lovely signs that we have outside our doorway. As many of you know, PIE Lagos can only be found at the top of a set of stairs, in a small ‘hard to find’ doorway in the center of town. It is vital that we have signage so that our customers can find us! Before we opened, we applied to the Câmara (the local council) for two street signs to mark the entrance. The same signs as many (if not all) of the other bars and restaurants on our street use outside their premises. The licence was granted and we spent a considerable amount of money on the signs themselves, and also on the licence. Happy days!

Fast forward to 1 month later, and the council have decided to take the licence away. With no rhyme or reason, without any form of refund or explanation, and therefore leaving us with essentially no way to lead customers into the restaurant. Awesome! Perhaps if they felt they were wrong to grant the licence (we still don’t know why that would be, seeing as every other bar and restaurant seems to have been allowed the signage) then they should have simply NOT allowed the licence to be renewed after the first year. But to just change your mind 1 month after the licence was granted? To leave a new business out of pocket to the tune of over 1000 euros just because you feel like it, or you think someone in your office made a mistake in the first place? Not cool.

Unfortunately we know that this is not an isolated incident, for us and for many other small business owners in the town. The headaches and heartaches caused by these regulators have no-doubt just begun for us, and have been going on for many years for the other businesses trying to make their way in Lagos.

But, we are going to try and fight the decision. We will be heading into the offices next week, hopefully with a lawyer in tow, to try and negotiate some sort of resolution.

Has anybody else in Lagos, or elsewhere in Portugal, had a similar experience? We’d love to know what roadblocks you encountered in terms of licencing and regulations in setting up your business, and if so - did you manage to resolve your disputes successfully?
